ICI Bucharest hosted the Aspen roundtable "AI @ Work: Simplification, regulation and infrastructure"

The National Institute for Research and Development in Informatics – ICI Bucharest hosted, on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, at its headquarters, the roundtable "AI @ Work: Simplification, regulation and infrastructure", organised within the Aspen Technology & Society Program – AI Initiative.

The discussions addressed topics relevant to the future of artificial intelligence in Europe and Romania, including the evolution of the European regulatory framework, the impact of the upcoming Digital Omnibus package, the real barriers to AI implementation, and the degree of alignment between the current digital infrastructure and the development ambitions in this field.

During the keynote speeches session, Adrian Victor Vevera, General Director of ICI Bucharest, emphasised the importance of an approach based on ethics, transparency and trust: “Through its role as host entity for the RO AI Factory, ICI Bucharest contributes to the consolidation of an essential infrastructure for the development and integration of artificial intelligence in Romania. At the same time, we believe that responsibility, ethics and transparency must permanently accompany technological progress. Artificial intelligence must be developed and used for the benefit of people, with respect for fundamental rights, data security and the principles that ensure society’s trust in new technologies”, stated Adrian Victor Vevera, General Manager of ICI Bucharest.

The event was opened by Radu Puchiu, Director of the Aspen Technology & Society program. During the keynote speeches session, Mircea Geoană, President of the Aspen Institute Romania, and Mădălina Marcu, Secretary of State in the Government of Romania, also spoke. The event marked the debut of the 2026 Aspen Technology & Society program. It proposed an applied approach to the conditions necessary for implementing AI at scale, focusing on the relationship between regulation, simplification and infrastructure – essential elements for competitiveness, innovation and investment.

Organised at the ICI Bucharest headquarters, the roundtable brought together public sector decision-makers, private sector leaders, infrastructure and technology experts, as well as representatives of academia, in an applied dialogue format, aimed at highlighting current bottlenecks and concrete directions of action for the development of an “AI-ready” ecosystem in Romania.
