Introducing the annual registration and maintenance fee for ".ro" domains

Taking into consideration the legal program of the Government for the period 2017-2020 and the list of legislative priorities of the Romanian Government for the first parliamentary session of 2017, which provides for a bill on the administration of the ".ro" Higher Level Domain, the Minister of Communications and Information Society mandated the members of the Board of Directors of the National Institute for Research and Development in Informatics - ICI Bucharest to cancel the decision of the ICI Bucharest Board of Directors regarding the implementation of the ".ro" domain registration and maintenance service.

On January 26th at ICI's Board of Directors, the Council decided to cancel the previous decision on the implementation of the ".ro" domain registration and maintenance service.

By open letter addressed to the Minister of Communications and Information Society, registered under no. 505 / 25.01.2017 at the Cabinet of Ministers, a number of 16 ROTLD partners requested the organization of public consultations on the introduction of the annual maintenance tariff for ".ro" domains.

For reasons related to the stimulation of the digital economy and the smooth functioning of the top-level domain register, we consider that it is necessary to regulate its administration and functioning in order to ensure a transparent, coherent and unitary framework that will underpin the operation of the domain .ro for public interest.

Taking into account the above, we announce the next timetable for public consultation.

Monday, January 30, 2017 - publishing a questionnaire on the principles underlying the regulation on the MCSI website. Answers to questions and any other point of view will be sent via the online questionnaire by February 28, 2017. The law will be drafted by an interinstitutional working group, based on the received viewpoints.

In July, the ministry will publish the bill for consultation. The project will remain in public consultation for at least 30 days, during which the ministry will hold at least one debate at the MCSI headquarters.

Following the public consultation process, the ministry will present the final draft of the law to the Government in September.
