Bucharest is a city of history and arts. It probably has more museums per capital than any other capital in the world. Below you'll find a list of selected museums. Usually there is a nominal entrance fee. Multi-lingual guides are typically available on request at no charge. Most museums are closed on Mondays. • Antipa Museum of Natural History: Sos. Kiselef no. 1. Ph. 312-8826. Open daily 10:00-18:00; closed Monday. This is one of the first natural history museums established in the world. There are 30 000 items including unique and controversial skeletons of Deinotherium Gigantissimus, 15 feet high.
• National Cotroceni Museum: Geniului Blvd. no. 1. Ph. 221-1200. Open daily 9:00-15:30; closed Monday. Reconstructing the atmosphere of the Mediavale Cotroceni Church (17 Century) and the ancient Royal Residence of King Ferdinand, Cotroceni Museum is a valuable architectural and historic site. • "George Enescu" Museum: Calea Victoriei no. 141. Ph. 659-6365. Open daily 10:00-17:00; closed Monday. Houses collections illustrating the history of music composition and documents from the life of eminent Romanian musician George Enescu.
• The Village Museum: Sos. Kiseleff 28-30. Ph.: 222-9110. Open daily 10:00-18:00. Monday closed. One of the most valuable ethnographic museum in the world. A creation of sociologist Dimitrie Gusti in 1936, the outdoors museum covers 30 hectares and displays over 70 exhibits of households, 99 auxiliary establishments, churches and traditional techniques and devices (water and windmills, oil presses, etc) from all the country's provinces. Folkloric art collections and souvenirs.
• The City Astronomic Observatory: Lascar Catargiu Blvd., 21. Ph.: 310-2563. It holds both a science fiction and an astronomic club. This small museum of Romanian history of astronomy is worth visiting. Reservations for the last century total solar eclipse may still be available...
• National Museum of Art: Calea Victoriei 49-53. Ph: 314-8119. Large collection of European art (over 1 000 000 exhibits) with numerous Romanian and foreign masterpieces. They are housed in what was the center of the Romanian royal power, the Royal Palace, the building of which was transformed after the WW II into Romania's National Museum of Art.
• Art Collections Museum: Calea Victoriei 111. Ph: 350-6132. All art genres are exhibited, including Romanian folk creations with the famous glass-painted icons. These collections were put together by lovers of art during a lifetime, and donated for public exhibition posthumously.

TEATRE

• National Theatre: 2, N.Balcescu Blvd. Ph: 314-7171. This theater has a vast repertoire that includes plays of national and worldrenowned playwrights, classical as well as modern. A branch of the National Theater presents American drama and stage productions performed in English by bilingual Romanian actors.
• Lucia Sturdza Bulandra Theatre: 1, Schitu Magureanu. Ph: 314-7546 76A, J.L. Calderon.Ph: 211-3441. It is Romania's representative to the "European Theater Union". As such, it hosted the Fourth European Theater festival that took place in Bucharest in 1995.
• Nottara Theatre: 20, Magheru Blvd., Ph: 212-5289. Established in 1965, this theater bears the name of a famous Romanian actor, C.I. Nottara, who contributed to the development of Romanian drama.
• Odeon Theatre: 40-42, Calea Victoriei, Ph: 314-7224. Founded in 1946, this theater features plays of modern playwrights.
• Casino Victoria: Calea Victoriei 174. Ph: 659-4913. Lovers of cabaret and musicals will enjoy the shows at this theater.
• "Teatrul Mic": Constantin Mille Str. 16; Ph: 314-7081
• "Teatrul Foarte Mic": Carol I Blvd. 21 Ph: 3140905
• Jewish State Theatre: 15, J. Barasch St., Ph: 323-3970. Founded in 1948, dramas and musicals are performed in Yiddish, Hebrew and Romanian.
• Comedy Theatre: Str. Sf. Dumitru 2; Ph: 312-0926.
• Constantin Tanase Theatre: 33-35, Calea Victoriei Ph: 222-5716. Satires and musicals in Romanian are the specialty of this theater.
• Tandarica Puppet Theatre: Calea Victoriei, Ph: 211-0829. A puppet theater, mainly for children, founded in 1949. Puppet shows for adults can also be seen at this theater.

CINEMATOGRAFE

In Bucharest, cinemas change movies every Friday. Movies are shown in their original language with Romanian sub-titles. The majority of cinemas show American movies, but one can also find European movies at the French Institute Cinema or the Cinemateca. Ticket prices vary between Lei 15 000 to 40 000. The Metro station given is the nearest one to the Cinema.

CONCERTE

Concerts usually start around 6 p.m. except for Opera and Musical Comedy matinees which start around 11 a.m.The Music University of Bucharest presents mostly classic recitals and is usually free of charge. The Opera has a wide repertoire and its performances are internationally renown. The Athenaeum hosts concerts with the Romanian National and International Philharmonic Orchestras. The Romanian Radio Society organizes concerts in its two halls starting at 7 p.m.; three-month tickets are available for 70 000 lei.Generally, individual tickets range between 15 000 - 55 000 lei.
