Techirghiol

Town in SE extremity of Romania (Constanta county), situated on the NW shore of Lake Techirghiol (11.6 sq.km), elevation 15-20 m, 18 km S of the municipality of Constanta, close to the Black Sea (3 km); population 6,746 (July 1, 1991). All-season resort of national importance. It was first marked on the country's map in 1893 but developed steadily after 1912. Excitant-stressful seashore climate with hot summers (July average temperature over 23°C) characterized by mostly sunny days (an average of 25 sunny days a month, with 10-12 hours of sunshine a day), and mild winters with little snow (January average temperature 0.5°C below). The annual average temperature is of 11.2°C and the precipitations amount to less than 400 mm per year. The marine breeze is lesser here than on the seashore but the lake breeze is evident. Lake Techirghiol is renowned for its salt water (mineralization: 86 g/litre) and sapropelic mud, which have extraordinary therament of degenerative rheumatic diseases (cervical, lumbar and dorsal spondylosis, coxarthrosis, gonarthrosis, arthrosis of the hands and feet, chronic lumbago), inflammatory rheumatic diseases (pain in the joints after acute articular rheumatism or infections in foci, rheumatoid spondylitis, rheumatoid polyarthritis) and abarticular rheumatic diseases (tendonitis, tendomyositis, scapulohumeral periarthritis, panniculosis, fibrillosis), as well as post- traumatic conditions (after operations on muscles, tendons, joints and bones, healed, after twists, luxations and fractures, after recent, operated, lumbar disk hernia), peripheral and central neurological disorders (post-traumatic paralysis and paresis of the limbs, polyneuropathies after the acute stage, sequelae after poliomyelitis, late sequelae after paraparesis and hemiparesis), gynecological disorders (ovarian insufficiency, chronic cervicitis, chronic metrosalpingitis secondary sterility, sequelae after genital tuberculosis, 2-3 years after stabilization), skin diseases (scaly dermatoses, incipient ichthyosis keratodermatitis, chronic eczema, urticaria), respiratory diseases (tracheobronchitis, chronic bronchitis), cardiovascular (Raynaud's disease, acrocyanosis, erythromelalgia, incipient varices, phlebitis sequelae, varicose ulcer) endocrine (benign hypothyroidism and mixedema, prepubertal hypoovarianism) and other disorders. The resort boasts five treatment bases, a balneal sanatorium for adults and another one for children with motor deficiencies (open around the year), a seasonal sanatorium for children suffering from rheumatism and rachitis, and an outdoor, summer treatment basis for aeroheliotherapy, applications of cold mud from the lake followed by bathing in the lake. Treatment consists of baths in tubs or pools with warm concentrated salt water pumped from the lake, applications of warm sapropelic mud, inhalations, electrotherapy and hydrotherapy. Accomodation is ensured in the sanatoriums, in hotels, pavilions, villas and private homes. Various opportunities for amusement and relaxation (cinema, summer theatre, sports-grounds, trips to the resorts on the Romanian and Bulgarian coast, to the Danube Delta, etc.).
