PUTNA MONASTERY

Putna Monastery, built by Stefan cel Mare (Stephen the Great) between 1466-1469 and reconstructed also by him in 1484; the church of the monastery was demolished during Vasile Lupu (1654), rebuilt by the princes Gheorghe Stefan and Eustratie Dabija, being resturated for the last time at the end of the XIXth century. From the old monastery, today existes only the thesaurus tower, built by Stefan cel Mare in 1481.

Putna Monastery was an important cultural-astistic center, here being a calligraphy and miniature workshop and a embroidery workshop.

The church was one of the greatest princely necropolis of Moldavia; here are burried Stefan cel Mare, Maria Voichita, Maria de Mangop, Bogdan cel Orb, Stefanita-Voda s.o.

In the monastery museum there is a valuable collection of embroideries from Stefan cel Mare's time, manuscripts, icons and silver ware.
