Town in Se central Romania (Brasov county) situated on the watershed between the rivers Prahova and Timis, in the Predeal pass, at the NE foot of the Bucegi Mountains (Southern Carpathians) and the NW foot of the Baiu Mountains (Eastern Carpathians), elevation 1,040 - 1,110 m, 25 km S of the municipality of Brasov and 147 km N-NW of the country's capital (Bucharest); population 7,949 (July 1, 1991)

All-season health and holiday resort of national importance, outstanding tourist and winter sports centre. Tonic, simulative mountain climate with cool; summers (July average temperature 15°C) and cold winters (January average 5°C below). The annual average temperature is of 5°C and the precipitation averages about 1,000 mm annually. The snow blanket lasts for about 100 days a year. The clean air, free of dust and allergens, rich in ozone and ultraviolet radiations, the marked ionization of the atmosphere and the relatively low pressure are the main cure factors recommended in the treatment of astheric neurosis, weakly conditions, physical and intellectual overexertion, certain endocrine disorders (benign hyperthyroidism) and growth disorders in children.
