POIANA BRASOV

POIANA BRASOV, all-season health and holiday resort of national importance, situated in SE central Romania (Brasov county), in a glade surrounded by coniferous forests, at the foot of the Postavaru Massif (Southern Carpathians), elevation 1,030 m, 12 km SW of the municipality of Brasov to which it is connected by a modernized road. Tonic-stimulant mountain climate with annual average temperatures of about 5°C (July average 14.5°C; January average - 5°C) and precipitation exceeding 900 mm annually (frequent showers). The snow blanket lasts for about 120 days a year.

The clean, ozone-rich air which is free of dust and allergens, the relatively low atmospheric pressure and the marked ionization are the natural cure factors recommended in the treatment of asthenia neurosis, weakly conditions, physical and intellectual overexertion, secondary anemia's, endocrine diseases (benign hyperthyroidism) and respiratory diseases (sequels after pleurisy or after viral or bacterial pneumonia, certain forms of bronchial asthma and of chronic asthmatiform bronchitis).

Poiana Brasov is Romania's most complex winter sports resort as well as an important international tourist centre; it boasts 12 ski runs of various difficulty degrees (an Olympic run, three downhill and giant slalom runs, one special slalom run, two jumps, etc.), sports grounds (for tennis, minigolf, handball, basketball), a lake, ropeway, rope chair, ski lift, indoor pools, saunas, medical gyms, discos, bars and restaurants, etc. Accommodation is provided mainly in luxury and first-class hotels and in a few villas and chalets.

Opportunities for trips to the cabins of Postavarul (1,602 m) and Cristianul Mare (1,704 m) as well as to the peasant citadel of Risnov (14th-17th c.), 14 km away; visits can be made to the historical and art monuments in the Brasov municipality (the towers and bastions of the old 15th c. fortifications; the St. Bartholomew Church, early Gothic (13th c.); the Black Church, Gothic, built over 1385-1476, now harboring a vast collection of oriental rugs; the Council House, 14th-18th c. today a museum; many houses and churches dating back to the 14th-18th c. etc.).
