PELISOR CASTLE |
|
In Sinaia, near the Peles castle there is a smaller monument named Pelisor. This castle was built between 1899 and 1902 by a Czech architect Karel Liman and decorated by the Viennese Bernhard Ludwig for King Ferdinand and Queen Maria.
Ferdinand was the nephew of King Carol the first and the son of Leopold von Hohenzollern. He came to Romania in 1889 and married Princess Maria three years later. Princess Maria was the daughter of Alfred, the duke of Edinburgh, and Maria Alexandrovna, the daughter of Czar Alexander the second. In 1914 they became monarchs because of the death of King Carol the first. The apotheosis of their reign was in 1918, when the World War I ended and Romania reunified with Basarabia, Bucovina and Transilvania.
Queen Maria was a very talented poet, painter and designer. She was named The Artist Queen. She picked the Art-Nouveau style for the castle decoration. Queen Maria considered the art from 1900 a weapon against the sterility of historicism. She created a personal style combining the Art-Nouveau elements with Byzantine and Celtic elements. Thus, "The Golden Bedroom", "The Chapel" and "The Golden Room" were born.
| The hall of honor is very simple with the walls covered with oak-timber. The glass ceiling is one of the architectural elements of the art from 1900 found here. |
