All-season health and holiday resort of national importance, situated in central Romania (Sibiu county) on the NE flank of the Cindrel Mountains (Southern Carpathians), in the heart of a coniferous forest, under the Oncesti peak, elevation 1,450 m, 32 km SW of the municipality of Sibiu, to which it is connected by a modernized road. Mountain climate with annual average temperature of about 4°C (July average 12°C; January average about -6°C) and abundant precipitation (over 1,000 mm annually). Rains are frequent but short, and the snow layers last for 120 days a year.
The main therapeutic factors are the alpine climate with clean air, free of dust and allergens, powerfully ozonized, rich in iodinated of ozonized aerosols and in ultraviolet radiations; also, a marked ionization of the atmosphere. In all seasons the resort is a pleasant place for holidays and a valuable source of good health. It is recommended in the treatment of asthenic neuroses, weakly conditions, physical and intellectual overexertion, secondary anemia and growth disorders in children, pleuropulmonary disorders (sequels after pleurisy and after viral or bacterial pneumopathies) and endocrine diseases (benign hyperthyroidism) etc.
The material base of the resort (several modern hotels, many villas and cabins), the recreational opportunities served by restaurants, the club with theatre and cinema hall, discotheque, library, volleyball, tennis and handball grounds, the touristic pastimes (walks in the resort and in the nearby area which is full of bilberry bushes, trips on the blazed mountain trails leading to the cabins at Gitul Berbecului - 1,175 m, Santa - 1,230 m, to the Cibin gorge and waterfall, to the peaks of Piscu Vulturului - 1,490 m and Cindrel - 2,244 m), etc., make any stay here most pleasant.
A special place which can be visited from here is the municipality of Sibiu where the medieval part with many historical and architectural monuments (The Council Tower, 1588; the Soldisch Bastion, 1627; the Evangelical Church, 14th-15th c., mural paintings dating back to 1445, large organ; old 16th c. private houses - the Haller House, the Reissen House; the Brukenthal Place, 1781-1785, presently housing the museum of medieval Transylvanian art, etc.) combines felicitously with the modern style of the new industrial, social, cultural or housing projects.
In winter Paltinis is one of the favorite resorts for winter sports, offering many ski runs of various difficulty degrees. Skiers are served by a rope chair (over a distance of 1,052 m and an elevation difference of 241 m) and a ski lift (over a distance of 410 m and an elevation difference of 138 m).
