Severin (seat of Mehedinti county); population 6,076 (july 1, 1991).

This is the oldes health resort in Romania, known since the Roman times, when it
was called Ad aquas Herculis sacras (its documentary attestation
as a resort dates back to A.D. 153), for the therapeutical
effects of the sulphurous, sodic, calcic, magnesian, oligomineral
thermal waters, that are slightly radioactive, used both in
internal and external cures. Given the high temperature of the
mineral waters (38-60°C) and the varied mineralization (3166-7426
mg...), their physiologic action is complex and the therapeutical
value - matchless.
The resort has developed especially after 1948
when it became an all-season resort of national importance,
recommended for the treatment of degenrative rheumatic troubles
(arthrosis, polyarthrosis, spondylosis, etc.), inflammatory
(spondylitis) and abarticular (tendonitis, tendomyositis,
scapulohumeral periarthritis), peripheral neurological disorders
(pareses, paralysis), as well as for the treatment of associated
diseases (gynecological, respiratory, otorhynolaryngological,
dermatological, obesity, etc.). The modern balneal facilities
provide for hydrotherapy, kinetotherapy, electrotherapy, there
are gyms and sauna, etc.
Contraindications: tuberculosis, liver and kidney diseases,
