BORSA, town in extreme N Romania (maramures county), in the eastern part of the Maramures depression closed by the Rodna and Maramures Mountains (Eastern Carpathians), elevation 700-850 m, in the Viseu valley, near the Prislop pass (elevation 1,414 m) which links Transylvania to Bukovina (a busy touristic area); population 30,504 (July 1, 1991). Mountainous climate, cold and humid, with cool summers (July average 15°c) and cold winters (January average - 7°C). Annual average temperature 7°C or so. Heavy precipitations (900-1000 mm annually). Clean, highly ozoniferous air.
In the eastern part of the town, 12 km from its centre, there is an all-season touristic compound of general importance with modern hotels, at the foot of Rodna Massif. This zone provides various facilities for mountaineering and winter sport (ski runds with various difficulty grades, olympic ski jump, 113 m, used till April and May). The tourist compound is linked by rope chair (1,920 m in legth, 500 m grade) to Poiana Stiol and further on, by ski lift (790 m in length), to Stiol peak (1,611 m).
Springs with mineral carbonated, ferruginous, bicarbonated, calcic, magnesian waters for the treatment of chronic diseases of the alimentary canal and of kidney and urinary system diseases. Owing to the tonic and stimulative climate, the resort is also recommended for the tretment of asthenic enurosis and respiratory disorders. Wooden church built in 1700, with murals dating back to 1775.
