Prahova Valley

Research Institute for Informatics

The Prahova Valley is a wide, deep cleft carved by the Prahova River into the granite of the southern Carpathians. It is a corridor between Transylvania and Walachia, an ancient route that is traversed today by the railway and a major road. Its breathtaking scenery and pervading sense of history make it a major tourist attraction.

The Prahova Valley, in the realm of the Bucegi Massif, is an unforgettable display of the splendors nature most generously holds out. The impression is overwhelming when stepping in its kingdom. The bare Bucegi Massif towers over the forested Prahova Valley with their splendid, various forms. The lines drawn on the sky by their calm, simple crests are in harmony with the Furnica (2 103 m), Jepii Mici (2 148 m), Jepii Mari (2 071 m), Caraiman (2 284 m), Costila (2 498 m) and Vanturis (1 942 m) high peaks.

More than anywhere else, the Bucegi Mountains display their entire splendor at Busteni. The Caraiman, with its monumental Cross dedicated to the glory of the First World War heroes and the pointed Costila peak, also called "the rock climbers' paradise", look like immense opal shadows melting leisurely away in the dimness of the evening hours.

On the Bucegi Plateau nature, magnificent in all its aspects, spreads out widely as if limitlessly. In wintertime, up here, the vast white expanses of immaculate snow which last till late in the spring shine dazzlingly, whereas in summer the mountain is enlivened by the red flowers of rhododendrons. A little longer halt at the Piatra Arsa, Babele, Furnica and the Omul Peak chalets helps the mountaineer to alleviate the accumulated climbing fatigue.

The tempting by-ways and footpaths afford different scenarios to the eyes and the mind, from waterfalls to gorges, from caves and awe-inspiring cliffs and precipices to the fantastic, giant and mysterious forms and figures with suggestive names, such as Babele (the Old Women) and the Sphinx.

Rope-ways have been provided to help visitors up to the highest peaks, but some of them are reachable by roads cut through the woods.

In the complexity of the Prahova Valley landscape, next to the mighty mountains, stand out also the symbols of a permanent and eternal past materialized in the Sinaia and Predeal monasteries, in the majesty of the Peles Castle in Sinaia and in so many other witnesses of the past.

Approached from Bucharest-Ploiesti the valley proper opens at Campina and reaches up into the mountains as far as Predeal at 1100 m.

Succeeding in close vicinity, in a necklace-like fashion, Sinaia, Busteni, Predeal gather in the free space left between the mountain and the river their smart and stylish villas and cottages. The image is wonderful and the Prahova Valley carries your fancy away to some small corner of Switzerland.

Between Predeal and Timis is the pass where the Prahova River springs out and flows south.

Beyond this pass the spectacular Timis Valley reaches north to Brasov from where the tourist can get to another marvellous spot: "Poiana Brasov" - "the Sun's Meadow" lying on a shyly extending plateau at the foot of Postavaru Mountain.

At 13 km off Brasov and 1020 m altitude, Poiana Brasov is nestled in a marvelous landscape, offering the pleasure of its skiing tracks or of the wandering along the mountains' sinuous paths. With so much splendor all around, one gets the impression of being enveloped by the indefinite. Prahova and Timis offer a succession of natural marvels, grand panoramas and a chain of high-quality resorts clustered along the lower slopes of a justly famous mountain range. In the snowy season something very close to real enchantment can be found there.
