Social-Democratic Party - PSD - Proposes Simplification of the Proceedings to Dissolute the Parliament

PSD will propose the review of the Constitution so that the proceedings designed to dissolute the Parliament be simplified, starting the 2004 election, in order to oust any possible suspicion that the governing party would like to review the Constitution in order to call early election - reports ROMANIAN RADIO BROADCASTING CORPORATION, quoting the party Vice-President, Valer Dorneanu. He said the project would be discused by the Parliament in February, so that a referendum could be called in May - June.


Discussion Regarding the New Criminal Code


Romanian Justice Minister, Rodica Stanoiu, thinks the discussions on the Criminal Code with the media and the civil society signalate a historic and unprecedented moment - reports ROMANIAN RADIO BROADCASTING CORPORATION. She said after these bodies met that possible errors of interpretation in the Criminal Code could thus be eliminated.
Cristian Tudor Popescu, a representative of the Romanian Press Club, said the meeting was useful for all the sides involved in the process.


Retort of Prime Minister Nastase at Mayor Basescu's Proposition

Romanian Prime Minister Adrian Nastase thinks that a meeting of the Mayor General of Bucharest, Traian Basescu, with the head of the Government, in order to discuss the credits coming from the European bank for Reconstruction and Development, could not be acceptable - reports ROMANIAN RADIO BROADCASTING CORPORATION. The Premier said if the Mayor wanted to discuss such issues, he could address the Government representatives within the territory, meaning, in his case, the Prefect of Bucharest.


Loan Agreement between the Romanian Commercial Bank and the EBRD

The RCB and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development have signed an agreement on a loan to be given by the EBRD to the Romanian bank, worth 50m euros - reports ROMANIAN RADIO BROADCASTING CORPORATION. The money will be used to finance long term mortgaging financing for natural persons and private companies. The document was signed by Kurt Geiger, from the EBRD and Nicolae Danila, from the RCB.


Press Conference of Romanian President Visiting Algeria

Romanian President Ion Iliescu said in a press conference in Alger that he and his Algerian counterpart, Abdelaziz Bouteflika, discussed a large number of issues regarding political, economic and cultural co-operation of the two countries - reports ROMANIAN RADIO BROADCASTING CORPORATION. Also, they have analysed the situation if the Middle East and the Iraqi crisis. The Romanian Chief of State said the two sides wished to re-launch the economic relationships and to identify new areas of shared interest in metallurgy, transportation and telecom, agriculture, but mostly in oil and natural gas. Iliescu said Romania was interested in having also an oil pipeline from Algeria, thus, the Minister for Industry, Dan Ioan Popescu, discussed a prolongation of the gas pipeline going from Algeria to Slovenia.
