1. President Ion Iliescu Had Meeting with President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo

Now on a visit to the Philippines the President of Romania Ion Iliescu has had talks with the President of the host country Mrs. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo at the Palace Malacanan of Manilla. May we remind you that it is 30 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Romania and the Philippines and Romania is the first country in our region with which the Philippines has established relations. According to the Philippino President the fact that Romania was chosen to be a partner of the Philippines in diplomatic and economic domains of activity was due in the first place to the fact that both countries have Neo-Latin cultures. President Ion Iliescu is the first Romanian President that makes a visit to that country.
The political, military, industrial and financial dimensions of the new strategic partnership between the United States and Europe are the main elements of the International Conference organized by the Royal Institute of International Affairs of London, the UK in which also participating is a delegation of the Ministry of National Defense led by secretary of state and Chief of the Department for Weaponry Matache. This is one more occasion for new meetings of the Romanian officials, says ROMANIAN RADIO BROADCASTING CORPORATION, with NATO officials and other personalities of the leadership of the North Atlantic Alliance.
As part of an interview to the main news channel of our radio corporation Hildegard Puwak said that she talked with European officials about the setting up in Bucharest of the Antifraud Office.
Mrs. Puwak was received by the Vice-Chairman of the European Parliament Klaus Hens, the main theme of the talks being the future of Europe as seen from Bucharest.
The Romanian Cabinet Minister for European Integration also met with Counselor Michel Barnier for talks on the application of the ISPA programme for our country as well as for negociations on the chapter of adherence regarding regional development, adds the main news channel of our radio corporation.

• The President of Romania Ion Iliescu continues his official visit to the Philippines. After talks with President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo the President has talks with the Chairmen of the two Chambers of the Parliament of that country.
• The Prime Minister of Romania Adrian Nastase makes an official visit to Ankara at the invitation of the Prime Minister of Turkey, Bulent Ecevit. Today the official talks and the signing of the joint declaration are scheduled while in the afternoon the Prime Minister of Romania also meets with the President of Turkey Ahmed Necdat Sezer and with former President of that country Suleiman Demirel. The Prime Minister is expected to arrive back home around midnight.
• Romanian Cabinet Minister for European Integration Hildegard Puwak meets in Brussels with the European Commissioner for Enlargement Gunther Vergeugen.
• Press conference of the Social Democratic Party - PSD - with Ecaterina Andronescu, Cabinet Minister of Education presenting as part of the conference details on meal tickets for the people employed in the education system.
• Romania is participating in the Ministerial Conference on Security of Civil Aviation which is unfolding in Montreal, Canada, being organized by OACI, a specialized institution of the United Nations Organization to which also belonging is Romania.
• At the Ministry of National Defense the Head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Lieutenant General Mihail Popescu receives the United States Naval Attache Commander Jeffery B. Taub who is now on a visit to Romania.

ANNIVERSARIES AND COMMEMORATIONS

• 1976 - Birth of Sculptor Constantin Brancusi in the village of Hobita, county Gorj,near Targu Jiu, Oltenia, western Romania. He became a French citizen and is considered to be the father of modern sculture, alongside Henry Moore. Brancusi died in Paris in 1957. His workshop is now part of the Pompidou Complex in the French capital.
