International Conference on the theme LOCAL AUTHORITIES IN ROMANIA IN THE PERSPECTIVE OF OUR COUNTRY'S INTEGRATION IN THE EUROPEAN UNION
With the President of Romania Ion Iliescu in attendance and key-note speaker the Palace of the Romanian Parliament is hosting the debates of the international conference LOCAL AUTHORITIES IN ROMANIA IN THE PERSPECTIVE OF OUR COUNTRY'S INTEGRATION IN THE EUROPEAN UNION. The Conference is organized by the Committee of the Regions in cooperation with the Federation of local authorities of Romania.
In his opening speech the President of Romania said that the Administration of our country is aiming at European models based on decentralization, transparency and the development of democracy, the active participation in a direct manner of all citizens in decision making, the democratization of the act of decision making as well as the stimulation of community initiatives.
The President also said that the Federation of Local Administration is an important partner who has an irreplaceble role in the network of administration bodies and it is also a unique partner of communication with specialized European institutions.
At the debates of the Conference also participating has been Adrian Severin who is the Chairman of the Regional committee of the European Union in the group of liason with the candidating countries and Chairman of OSCE Parliamentary Assembly alongside other guests of the candidating countries, reports ROMANIAN RADIO BROADCASTING CORPORATION.
President Ion Iliescu Received Mehdi Karoubi, Chairman of the Consultative Assembly of the Islamic Republic of Iran
President Ion Iliescu received Mehdi Karoubi, Chairman of the Consultative Assembly of the Islamic Republic of Iran who makes a visit to Romania. Stress was laid on the development of bilateral relations and on collaboration between the two countries for doing away with sources of tension and inbalance in the world. The Iranian Delegation Was Received by the Patriarch of Romanian Orthodox Church
The Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church Teoctist received the Iranian parliamentary delegation led by the Chairman of the Consultative Assembly of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The meeting stresses that there are common areas of Christian Orthodoxy and Islam while the Patriarch added that it was high time for religious faiths to register rapprochement so that mankind get together and remove tension and serious trouble, reports ROMANIAN RADIO BROADCASTING CORPORATION. In his turn the guest said that the Islamic Republic of Iran as a religious state pursues a policy of detente in the Middle East and this is why it is asking for the support of all political and religious personalities with a view to remove the danger of not having repeated the terrorist actions recently perpetrated in America.
The President of Romania Received the Chairman of the National Assembly of Hungary
President Ion Iliescu received the Chairman of the Hungarian National Assembly Ander Janos an occasion for the two interlocutors to say that the signing of the Treaty between the two countries is a very important step for the development of relations between the two countries, the visit of the Hungarian delegation to Romania being considered part of this development process. Stress was also laid on the fact that the issues of the national minorities must be solved in a democratic spirit in keeping with the norms of European Union. As necessary is the building of a favorable climate based on common interests and mutual confidence. President Ion Iliescu appreciated the concern of the Hungarian Government for the Magyars living in Roimania and specified that the national minorities are the primordial factor linking the two countries, reports ROMANIAN RADIO BROADCASTING CORPORATION.
Meeting of the Chairman of the Romanian Senate with the Chairman of the Hungarian National Assembly
The main item on the agenda of the meeting between Nicolae Vacaroiu and Ader Janos was the bill of law on the statute of Magyars living outside the borders of Hungary. The Chairman of the Romania Senate said that in working out and wording this bill of law the Hungarian Parliament did not take into account the provisions of the Treaty between the two countries which provide for consultations between the two sides in case decisions are made concerning the two countries. Vacaroiu said that an accord could be reached so that the Bucharest authorities should not resort to countermeasures.
In his turn the Chairman of the Hungarian National Assembly said the bill of law of Budapest is in keeping with international legislation and the obligations as well as provisions of the Treaty between the two countries and suggested the Romanian side should study more carefully the text of the bill of law. The guest also added that the bill of law is aimed at all Magyars living in the countries that neighbor Hungary and none of the neighboring countries with the exception of Romania had any objection at the bill of law, reports ROMANIAN RADIO BROADCASTING CORPORATION.
Meeting of the Romanian Foreign Minister with Ader Janos
The Chairman of the Hungarian National Assembly Ader Janos was received by the Romanian Foreign Minister Mircea Geoana who told the guest that Romania was very much interested in having very good relations with Hungary adding that these relations would get a new scope after Romania's eventual joining NATO. Bucharest would continue negociations regarding the Bill of Law on the statute of Magyars living outside the borders of Hungary and was also waiting for the point of view of international organizations.
ROMANIAN RADIO BROADCASTING CORPORATION adds that the guest told his host that the Hungarian Parliament was ready to share experience with Romanian Parliament and officials in as far as NATO joining and EU joining are concerned and expressed lack of comprehension at the fact that the bill of law on the statute of Magyars living outside Hungary could affect relations between the two countries. According to Ader the Bill of Law on the Statute of Magyars living outside Hungary contains no discriminations. Ader Janos told media that he firmly believed that there would be no problems and no objections would be formulated by the Venice report on the bill of law as the law was very good, adds the main news channel of ROMANIAN RADIO BROADCASTING CORPORATION.
Romania is a Member of Governors' Council at AIEA
At the 45 Conference of the International Agency for Atomic Energy in Vienna Romania was elected for the next two years in the Board of Governors of the Agency. ROMANIAN RADIO BROADCASTING CORPORATION which released the story adds that Serban Constantin Valeca represented our country at the conference. Press Conference at the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs
The spokesman of the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Victor Micula announced that the Romanian Foreign Minister Mircea Geoana would be present in his capacity of Chairman of OSCE at the international conference THE BALKANS AND THE EUROPEAN UNION. Geoana will also go to Denmark this month while on 11 October he would open the Bucharest the conference on the theme 10 YEARS OF ROMANIAN CONTRIBUTION TO PEACE KEEPING OPERATIONS, reports the ROMANIAN RADIO BROADCASTING CORPORATION.
Favorable Premises for the Development of Relations of Collaboration Between the Parliament of Romania and Germany
Prime Minister Adrian Nastase received visiting Parliamentary delegation of the land of Bavaria led by the Chairman of the Committee of Budget and Finance Manfred Ach, an occasion for expressing the wish of both sides to develop relations of collaboration at Parliamentary and Government level. Balansheet of the Visit of the Romanian Cabinet Minister of European Integration to Sweden
Mrs. Hildegard Puwak visited Sweden on 2 and 3 October. The visit was focused on Romanian efforts of joining the European Union and on the political aspect of relations between the Romanian Social Democratic Party and the European Socialists' Party. The latter, according to Mrs. Puwak are wording a document reffering to long lasting relations to be discussed during the ensuing period.
As part of a phone interview to ROMANIAN RADIO BROADCASTING CORPORATION Mrs. Puwak said that Sweden would support the lifting of visa obligation for the Romanian citizens that travel to the Schengen area starting 1 January next year. Sweden would also support Romania in securing its state frontiers.
President Ion Iliescus Continues Series of Consultations with Parliamentary Parties
The President of Romania Ion Iliescu received on Wednesday the delegations of the National Liberal Party, of the National Peasant Christian Democratic Party and of a faction of the latter.
According to ROMANIAN RADIO BROADASTING CORPORATION the President of the National Liberal Party Valeriu Stoica said after the meeting with the President of the country that he insisted on danger of extremism in this country and that he was very happy with the fact that the President of Romania would no longer have any kind of dialog with the President of the Greater Romania Party Corneliu Vadim Tudor after the latter had accused officials of Romania that they would allegedly encourage terrorism.
Stoica also said the liberals were standing for the furthering of privatization and of the economic reform.
The leader of PNTCD Victor Ciorbea said his party was supporting Romania's joining Euroatlantic structures and expressed his hope that interferences in the affairs of the legal machinery of this country would come to an end.
The leader of the group Lupu-Chirita - Marga of PNTCD Vasile Lupu said that according to him the President had had nothing to do with the splitting of PNTCD and told media he had urged the President during their talk to take action for barring corruption and for creating a healthy environment for investors, reports ROMANIAN RADIO BROADCASTING CORPORATION.
New Executive Secretary of the Social Democratic Party
Foreign Minister Mircea Geoana is the new Executive Secretary of the Social Democratic Party entrusted with international relations. Also voted to offices similar to that of Mircea Geoana are Octav Cazmanca who is Executive Secretary for issues of organization, Simona Marinescu for social issues, Petre Moldovan for relations with political parties and the trade unions and Codrin Stefanescu for programmes. According to ROMANIAN RADIO BROADCASTING CORPORATION the Social Democratic Party has seven Executive Secretaries at present.
Statement of Prime Minister Adrian Nastase
According to Prime Minister Adrian Nastase, Corneliu Vadim Tudor as President of the Greater Romania Party was no longer welcomed at the Headquarters of the Cabinet of Romania following the latter's allegations connected to a supposed involvement of officials of this country in training Palestinian guerrila fighters. The measure adopted in connection with Tudor is a proof of the fact that the Bucharest Cabinet sends a clear message to NATO in connection with furthering efforts of joining Euroatlantic structures. Prime Minister Nastase also added that the measure was adopted in token of solidarity with the stand of the President of Romania who refuses to see and talk to the president of the Greater Romania Party in the wake of the allegations.
Romanian - Iranian Economic Collaboration
The Romanian Minister of Industry Dan Ioan Popescu signed on Wednesday together with his Iranian opposite number a document concerning collaboration in the economic domain on the occasion of the 14-th session of the Mixed Committee of Economic Collaboration between the two countries. The document provides for exemption of double tax, protection of foreign investments and customs agreement between the two states. A Romanian Government delegation will visit Iran next month, reports ROMANIAN RADIO BROADCASTING CORPORATION.
Debates of Romanian - Austrian Mixed Committee of Bilateral Economic Relations
End at Oradea of the debates of the Mixed Committee of Bilateral Economic Relations and according to ROMANIAN RADIO BROADCASTING CORPORATION the interests of the two countries in the market economy are encouraged by new measures adopted during the session also by the fact that the two sides aim at a ceiling of one thousand million USD in bilateral economic exchanges. The Romanian delegation was led by Mihai Berinde, secretary of State with the Ministry of Industry and Resources and the Austrian delegation was led by Joseph Meier, deputy Minister with the Ministry of Austria for Labor and Economy.
