Public Opinion in Romania About Political Leaders


METROMEDIA of Transylvania released the results of an opinion poll which was focused on everyday problems and on credibility issues in this country. According to the opinion poll the Romanians, 89 per cent of them, have placed their trust in the Romanian Church, 72 per cent in the Army, 54 per cent in local officials of the Town Hall, fifty per cent in the Presidency.
The Romanians are three times more confident now than at the beginning of the year. The data, according to ROMANIAN RADIO BROADCASTING CORPORATION are the result of questions asked 1816 people over 18 years of age and of 286 people aged between 18 and 25.
According to the study Ion Iliescu is the politician with the longest political life that has now 50 per cent of the votes to the office of President of Romania.
In as far as political orientation is concerned there are two drives: the elderly prefer left wing parties while the younger strata of the population go for liberal or center oriented parties.
60 per cent of the Romanians asked believe that joining the European Union brings about advantages to Romania.


Laws and Emergency Ordinances Passed by the Romanian Senate


The Senate gave final vote to the draft law on access to information of public interest. The law is settling the ways and means ensuring access of the citizens of the country and of mass media to each category of information of public interest, institutional responsibilities, sanctions as well as exceptions from the compulsory character of the communication of information.
During the same session also passed was the emergency ordinance of the Cabinet on the taking over of the civil protection units that intervene in disaster areas from the command of the Ministry of National Defense to that of the Home Affairs Ministry.


ECONOMIC NEWS

The Government Will Not Alter Legislation on Privatization

The Authority for Privatization and the Administration of the Interests of the State specifies that the Cabinet of Bucharest will not alter Privatization Law as the present framework created gives confidence to the investors and launches a signal of confidence. This in fact had already been reported to the international financial organizations last March, transmits ROMANIAN RADIO BROADCASTING CORPORATION.


BERD Delegation to Romania

The Director of the Group of Infrastructure as part of BERD begins a visit to Romania on Monday at the invitation of the Cabinet Minister of Public Administration. The visit is a furthering of the actions of the Romanian delegation in London with a view to promoting strategy of investments to Romania in the local infrastructure; the Romanian delegation also requested the participation of the Bank in the programme of development of municipal infrastructure now in its third phase of development.


Computer Programmers Will No Longer Pay Salary Taxes

The measure was adopted by the Cabinet of Romania in order to stimulate computer programmers to stay on and work in Romania. Thus the companies that have hired computer specialists and programmers as well as soft specialists no longer have to pay taxes for the salaries of this category of employees.


Romanian - Turkish Relations

Value of commercial exchanges between the two countries has reached one thousand million USD according to the understanding reached by the two countries eight years ago, said President Ion Iliescu at the meeting with his opposite number Ahmet Sezer who made an official visit to Romania. The President of Romania believes that Romanian - Turkish relations are stimulated by the Law of Direct Investment and by facilities created to the Small and Middle Sized Companies of this country. Presidents Iliescu and Sezer are of the opinion that their countries will cooperate for combatting money laundering in the Balkan area.

Protest of the Loosers


People that lost their money in the wake of the FNI crash protested in front of the Building of the Government and were pushed away by police that also escorted all protesters back to their buses, as people came from all over Romania to Bucharest to protest the fact that they had not been compensated for their loss.
To follow up ROMANIAN RADIO BROADCASTING CORPORATION reported that the General Secretary of the Cabinet of Romania Serban Mihailescu said the Cabinet worked out the draft bill for compensating the people that lost their money in the wake of the National Investment Fund - FNI - crash. The Government suggested that the money aid should be to the value of ten million lei if the income per family is less than one million lei per month.


INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS

Romanian Visit of the President of Turkey at the Invitation of the President of Romania


Official talks took place at the Cotroceni Palace last night between the Presidents of Romania and Turkey, Ion Iliescu and Ahmet Necdet Sezer. At the press conference after the talks the President of Romania said Romanian - Turkish relations are an example of good relations in the area, of the fact that the nations of the two countries understood that they had to overcome controversies in the historic past of both Romania and Turkey and during our time they have built solid, mutually beneficial relations. Romania and Turkey are headed toward the same goal of joining the European Union and Turkey supports the efforts of Romania to become a NATO member.
The two presidents have stood for the solution of all problems in Macedonia and in other areas of the Balkans by means of the political dialog, reports ROMANIAN RADIO BROADCASTING CORPORATION.
The Presidents of the two countries have also met with Turkish businessmen in Romania and during the meeting the President of Turkey told those present that officials of Ankara and Bucharest were making all efforts to support their activity even more.
The President of Romania told the businessmen that in the process of privatization the companies that are best will win most.


Reception at the Presidency

The President of Romania Ion Iliescu received the Chairman of the ANSALDO group of Italy, Angelo Airaghi, an occasion to underline the necessity of renewing the good relations which Ansaldo has had in this country. This decision to capitalize on traditional relations of cooperation was in fact already materialized by the signing of the contract with ANSALDO aimed at finalizing the work for the start of operations of Reactor No. 2 at Cernavoda Romanian Atom Power Plant, reports ROMANIAN RADIO BROADCASTING CORPORATION.


Prime Minister Adrian Nastase Has Met with Chief Negociator of IMF for Romania


Prime Minister Nastase has met with Neven Mates who is now in Romania. Both sides appreciated the progress scored in the economic domain by Romania in the last few months. Neven Mates also said that talks would continue with the Finance Minister and with the Governor of the National Bank of Romania regarding the letter of intention of the Government of Romania for the stand-by accord with the International Monetary Fund.
ROMANIAN RADIO BROADCASTING CORPORATION also informs that in the fall a new stand-by accord with the IMF would be concluded.


Romanian Debt to Sweden

Prime Minister Adrian Nastase announced that his Swedish opposite number Goran Persson arrives in Romania for an official visit during which the signing takes place of the accord between the two countries stipulating the paying by Romania of the debt to Sweden accumulated since the nationalization of properties in Romania in 1948-1949. The debt owed by Romania is worth 120 USD and it also covers older debts of the Romanian state to Sweden in the 1030-ies. The agreement leading to the accord to be signed was passed by both Cabinet last week.


Romanian Ambassador to Washington Presented His Credentials


Sorin Ducaru was received by the President of the United States, George Walker Bush at the White House on Thursday. Ambassador Ducaru gave the President of the United States the original of the letter sent by President of Romania Ion Iliescu in which appreciation and satisfaction for the stand of the US in Europe is expressed in eulogistic words.
The President of the United States said the relations of his country with Romania constitute a corner-stone of relations of the US in the region of South Eastern Europe and voiced the determination of the Administration to continue relations with Bucharest as part of the Partnership for Peace programme, reports ROMANIAN RADIO BROADCASTING CORPORATION.


The Law of the Magyars Living Outside Borders of Hungary Seen from Bucharest


Prime Minister Adrian Nastase reiterated the stand of his cabinet regarding the impossibility of application of the Law on the territory of Romania. The Executive also considers as inadmissible the statement of Prime Minister Orban Viktor who, according to Romanian authorities, cannot speak of European values in the conditions in which the European Union rejected the Hungarian Law on the Statute of Magyars living outside the borders of Hungary. Budapest, Romanian authorities also say, did not take into account any of the objections of the Romanian side expressed during talks prior to the voting of the law and thus discriminatory regime was created which is contrary to international regulations. Prime Minister Nastase also said that all Cabinet Ministries are to monitor developments all over Romania in the wake of the passing of the law.
The ambassadors of all European Union countries to Romania are invited at the Government of Romania next week to learn the stand of the Government of Bucharest in connection with the Law of Budapest while all officials of the European Union were sent letters from Bucharest with the stand of the Cabinet of this country.
