METROMEDIA TRANSILVANIA which is an Institute of Social Studies, Polls and Publicity released the results of the questions asked in July related to the political and social situation reports ROMANIAN RADIO BROADCASTING CORPORATION. The political personalities that rally the trust of the citizens of Romania are Ion Iliescu, Adrian Nastase, Corneliu Vadim Tudor - the third one coming at a distance of 19 points behind Premier Nastase and more than 22 behind President Iliescu - Traian Basescu, Theodor Stolojan, Marko Bela and Petre Roman.
If next Sunday there are Presidential elections in conditions in which President Iliescu does not candidate for a new mandate, according to the Constitution, more than 37 per cent of the people asked are voting for Adrian Nastase, more than 24 per cent are voting for Corneliu Vadim Tudor,more than 15 per cent go for Traian Basescu and close to 13 per cent are electing Theodor Stolojan.
In as far as parliamentary elections are concerned PSD get more than 57 per cent, PRM are receiving close to 20 per cent, PD more than 10 per cent, PNL more than 7 per cent, UDMR receives close to six per cent and PNTCD receives 1.4 per cent.
The poll was made as part of the programme THE CIVIL SOCIETY IN THE TIMEFRAME 6 - 11 July.
Cards for Magyar Ethnic Group Members
More than two thirds of the population of Romania are of the opinion that Magyar Cards are useless, this is the conclusion of the poll conducted by METRO MEDIA TRANSILVANIA. 67 per cent of the people asked know the details of the Bill of Law adopted by the Parliament of Hungary regarding the release of special cards to the people that belong to Magyar ethnic minority and live outside the borders of Hungary. 8o per cent of the people asked are of the opinion that the implementation of this bill of law should not be accepted in Romania while 7o per cent of the people asked said they believed the refusal of the Cabinet of Romania to abide by the Bill of Law adopted by the Hungarian Parliament was the most adequate attitude. One of ten Romanians asked would however request to have such a card while eight per cent do not have any oppinion, reports ANTENNA ONE Television.
The Issue of Autonomy in the Constitution of Romania
Mr. Toro Tibor, leader of the Reformist Wing of UDMR - Union of Democratic Magyars of Romania - said in Tusnad at the Summer University Balvanyos that the issue of autonomy is topical now more than ever before and the will to alter the Constitution of Romania is enjoying political consensus in the Parliament of the country reports ROMANIAN RADIO BROADCASTING CORPORATION. Toro Tibor said that according to his own oppinion after Article Six of the Constitution the right to cultural autonomy, including the use of a language other than Romanian, could be inserted. Another Article that should be altered, Mr. Toro Tibor continued, was that number three referring to the administrative and territorial structure of the country. It is here, Mr. Tomor Tibor said, that the principle of regional autonomy should be introduced and that the present distribution is obsolete. The speaker added that he did not mean autonomy on ethnical basis.
The Chairman of the Parliamentary Assembly of OSCE Adrian Severin said the Bill of Law on the Statute of the Magyars living the countries which are neighboring Hungary did not solve the issues or brought about more quiet in international relations. In the oppinion of Mr. Adrian Severin a Bill of Law that introduces elements of discrimination is of a nature to produce frustration and this does not contribute to the development of a spirit of cooperation.
Bishop Tokes Laszlo Accuses UDMR and PSD
Reformed Bishop Tokes Laszlo accuses both the Union of Democratic Magyars of Romania and the Social Democratic Party - UDMR and PSD - of the fact that they did nothing so that the Reformed Churches should be given back to the respective community. According to ROMANIAN RADIO BROADCASTING CORPORATION Mr. Tokes said the policy of UDMR did not lead anywhere and that the partnership with PSD was of no good especially in as far as the Reformed Churches rerocession was concerned. Tokes Laszlo also accuses UDMR of agreeing with the omission by PSD from the basic Treaty between Romania and Hungary of the retrocession of the goods and assets of the Reformed Church.
National Committee for Preventing Crime
The Cabinet approved the creation of the National Committee for the Prevention of Crime that is under the Prime Minister of Romania. The Committee is entrusted with the analysis of the causes that lead to crime propogation as well as with the legislative measures that have to be adopted so that this phenomenon be erradicated. According to ROMANIAN RADIO BROADCASTING CORPORATION the Committee is made up of representatives of various Cabinet Ministries and is coordinated by the Minister of Justice.
The biggest steel combinat works of Romania and one of the largest on the continent SIDEX of the town of Galati was privatized by selling majority stock to number four steel producer of the world LNM. The documents were signed the day before yesterday. The Romanian Cabinet Minister of Privatization Ovidiu Musetescu together with Lakshmi Mittal who is the Executive Director of buying LNM and other representatives of the group met in the town of Galati with Trade Union leaders and with local authorities. At a press conference it is mentioned by ROMANIAN RADIO BROADCASTING CORPORATION the Romanian Minister of Privatization Ovidiu Musetescu said, quote :" The management of SIDEX of Galati would not be able to make in the next 100 days commercial engagements bigger than 100,000 USD in the name of the Combinat Works without consultations with observers of LNM group." end of the quotation. Mr. Musetescu also specified that that by 31 October the Privatization Authority and LNM must sign all financial agreements for the cancellation of penalties, Mr. Musetescu also said that LNM was interested in buying the theremoelectric unit of the Combinat works which is the property of ELECTRICA SA.
The sum for the purchase of SIDEX is of 500 billion USD and the Executive Director of LNM told the media that the negociations of buying the Combinat Works were very tough and each session lasted even ten hours or more. This demonstrates how serious was the Cabinet of Romania in as far as the privatization of this Combinat Works was concerned.
Association of Ghimbav Helicopter and Airplane Producing Unit and Eurocopter
The General Assembly of Stock Holders of IAR Ghimbav approved the association of the factory with the French - German factory EUROCOPTER with a view to forming the new Company EUROPTER ROMANIA transmits ROMANIAN RADIO BROADCASTING CORPORATION. The approvals will be obtained before the end of September. Industrial activities will start during the last three months of the year. Besides building the assembly line for the new light helicopters EUROCOPTER will transfer all operations to the Romanian factory. It is intended that component parts for AIRBUS be turned out by Brasov factory. The news channel of RADIO ROMANIA also mentions that EUROCOPTER is number three of the world in as far as production of air-ships is concerned.
Starting 2003 There Will Be Three Telephone Operators in Romania
Romtelecom concludes exclusive contract interval on 31 December 2002. The Romanian Cabinet Minister of Communications Dan Nica told the ROMANIAN RADIO BROADCASTING CORPORATION that the Romanian state will sell the entire stock which is of 65 per cent. Among the parties interested to buy stock there is ABN AMRO, FORD AND FRANCE TELECOM. OTE from Greece has 35 per cent of the social capital of ROMTELECOM.
ALMA MATER professors are threatening to block the academic and university year. They are not satisfied with the draft of Salaries of teachers and professors that provides for the increase of salaries by six per cent starting January 2002 announces ROMANIA ONE Television Station. The Chairman of the Federation Razvan Bobulescu says this increase cannot cope with the inflation which is foreseen for this year.
Chief Negociator with the European Union Vasile Puscas is attending the 8-th session of the Intergovernment Conference for Romania joining the European Union, a session which is unfolding in Brussels, informs ROMANIAN RADIO BROADCASTING CORPORATION. As part of this first conference opened will be Chapter 23 of negociation PROTECTION OF CONSUMERS AND PUBLIC HEALTH whose document of complementary position had already been communicated to the European Union at the end of last year. Until now Romania has seven chapters concluded namely: fishing, statistics, small and middle sized companies, science and research, education and professional training, international economic relations and foreign policy as well as common security.
Relations with the Republic of Moldova.Official Visit of Prime Minister Vasile Tarlev
Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova Vasiel Tarlev is on an official visit to Romania at the invitiation of his Romanian opposite number Prime Minister Adrian Nastase for an analysis of bilateral relations including political, economic, commercial and cultural relations. ROMANIAN RADIO BROADCASTING CORPORATION mentions the componence of the delegation which includes high officials of the economic and military domains.
Prime Minister Tarlev mentioned the fact that Romania would give Moldova on the occasion of this visit one million USD as non refundable assistance for the issuing of passports to a number of poor and very poor persons.
Targets of Worktogether of OSCE with the European Union and NATO
At Balvanyos Summer University at Tusnad the Chairman of OSCE Parliamentary Assembly Adrian Severin said this body must work with the European Union and with NATO for the viable implementation of the concept of security by cooperation, transmits ROMANIAN RADIO BROADCASTING CORPORATION. Adrian Severin also said that enlargement of the European Union is a question which is of interest to all states of the continent including Romania and Hungary. A priority of OSCE is also the opening of dialog with the European Union and NATO regarding the joining of new countries. Another target of OSCE is the administration of crises and from this point of view the Kosovo crisis is a failure of OSCE in that area as violence was not avoided.
