Activity of the Comittee for Defense, Public Order and National Security of the Senate
The members of the Committee for Defense, Public Order and National Security of the Romanian Senate had separate meeting in the town of Constanta with the representatives of the Police County Inspectorate and with those of the Military Navy. Media were not allowed in the buildings where the debates took place. According to Senator Sergiu Nicolaescu who is the Chairman of the Committee issues were tackled pertaining to the entire county of Constanta, special stress being laid on the problems which are facing, generally speaking, this county, reports ROMANIAN RADIO BROADCASTING CORPORATION.
Aspects of the Activity of Political Parties of Romania
PNL - National Liberal Party - welcomes the determination of the Social Democratic Party to start serious talks on changing the Romanian Constitution. The Chairman of the National Council of the National Liberal Party Stolojan said that he received with much joy the letter of the leaders of the Social Democratic Party which was focused on this issue. Stolojan added that his party would study in depth all issues which were raised by this action and then will word its own point of view.
The Social Democratic Party by the Ministry of Small and Middle Sized Companies which issued a communique quoted by the ROMANIAN RADIO BROADCASTING CORPORATION announced that a Code of investments would be issued soon. Facilities granted to small and middle sized companies are to be modified following an understanding between the Ministry for Small and Middle Sized Companies the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. At the end of the year the Cabinet will make an assessment of the impact of these facilities on the state budget while in the near future alterations are to be worked out as a result of the assessment.
Cabinet Minister of Culture and Cults, Academician Razvan Theodorescu visits county Hunedoara. Academician Theodorescu is tackling there a number of issues together with local men of art and culture with focus on the protection of the national patrimony especially the Dacian walled and fortified cities of Orastie Mountains and at Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa.
During the dialog with the Prefect of county Hunedoara Academician Theodorescu said a programme was unfolding dealing with the further study of Romanian cultural assets; acording to this programme starting 2002 the units and institutions which are subordinated to the Ministry of Culture and Cults would be decentralized, reports ROMANIAN RADIO BROADCASTING CORPORATION.
Former Vice-President of the National Peasant Christian Democratic Party Vasile Lupu said he no longer recognized Victor Ciorbea as interim President of the Party and added that from this point of view PNTCD was illegal.
If the leading bodies of the Party do not convene an extraordinary congress of the party very soon Vasile Lupu has declared he would resort to Courts of Law for legality to be instituted within this party.

Mr. Ciorbea said more than 30 party organizations were supporting the decisions of the National Leadership Bureau of the party adding that the accounts of the party could not be frozen by any bank reports ROMANIAN RADIO BROADCASTING CORPORATION.
The Association of Mayors of the Large Cities of Romania Was Incepted
ROMANIAN RADIO BROADCASTING CORPORATION reports that mayors of three large cities of Romania, namely Brasov, Timisoara and Cluj-Napoca have incepted the Association of the Mayors of the Large Cities of Romania. The mayors are Ion Ghise, Gheorghe Funar and Coriolan Ciuhandru. The main objectives of the Association are the representation of the interests of the citizens of these cities as each of the municipalites has more than 300,000 inhabitants. The issues are linked to public local administration, legislative proposals in the domain of defending the interests of the respective mayors and the analysis, alongside specialists of the Romanian Cabinet, of the effects of price increases. The seat of the Association is the Town Hall of the town of Brasov.
Results of President Ion Iliescu's Visit to Poland
On Wednesday, Polish President Alexander Kwasniewski and his Romanian counterpart Ion Iliescu held official talks and attended the opening of the Polish-Romanian Economic Forum, the ROMANIAN RADIO BROADCASTING CORPORATION informed. At a press conference following the talks the Polish head of State said the two countries had the common objective of joining the European Union, and reiterated Poland's support for Romania's integration into NATO, considering this country's extremely important role in South-East Europe, especially in the Balkans. Alexander Kwasniewski also highly appreciated the particular attention payed by the Government in Bucharest to the Polish minority in Romania.
In the afternoon, the members of the two delegations signed the Inter-Governmental Agreement regarding co-operation in the fight against organized crime, terrorism and other crimes, as well as the Inter-Governmental Convention regarding plant protection and phyto-sanitary quarantine.
Brazilian Delegation Visiting Bucharest
Radu Podgoreanu, the chairman of the Committee for Foreign Policy of the Chamber of Deputies met a delegation of the Committee for Foreign Relations and National Defense of Brazil's Chamber of Deputies. Mr. Podgoreanu told the ROMANIAN RADIO BROADCASTING CORPORATION the Brazilian guests expressed their interest to develop the co-operation between the two countries in deep sea drillings for oil extraction. He also said he insisted on widening the bilateral relations, in order to reduce the existing imbalance of payments.
The Brazilian delegation also met members of the Parliamentary Group of Brazil-Romania Friendship, and the Secretary of the Chamber of Deputies Constantin Nita.
The European Court for Human Rights Admitted the Complaints Lodged by the "Ilascu Group"
The European Court for Human Rights in Strasbourg admitted the complaints lodged by the wives of the members of the so-called "Ilascu Group" against the Republic of Moldova and the Russian Federation. The ROMANIAN RADIO BROADCASTING CORPORATION reminds the members of the group are: Ilie Ilascu, Tudor Petrov Popa, Andrei Ivantoc and Alexandru Lesco. Moldovan representative Vitalie Parlog refused to say anything about the term set to solve the case, but specified the European jury might ask for further information by then. The Court in Strasbourg also decided Romania would be the third part implied in the trial, considering that Ilie Ilascu had become a member of the Parliament of Romania. The trial is expected to be very difficult, since when signing the Convention for Human Rights the Moldovan Government refused to assume responsability for the violation of this convention by the separatist regime in Transdniestria.
The Hearings Regarding the Privatization of "Romtelecom" Continue
The Criminal Investigations Police Department heard the former finance minister Decebal Traian Remes in the case of the privatization of "Romtelecom". He said afterwards he could offer the policemen no relevant information, and appreciated the privatization contract was perfectly legal, but the State Property Fund and not "Romtelecom" should have payed the 9 million dollars to the consultance company Goldmann & Sachs. The ROMANIAN RADIO BROADCASTING CORPORATION specifies Mr. Remes was heard as member of the committee in charge with co-ordinating the privatization of "Romtelecom".
Developments in the Case of the Steel Works in Resita
The County Court of Caras-Severin rejected the request for a presidential ordinance forwarded by the American owner of the steel works in Resita, and decided an appeal could be made within five days. The ROMANIAN RADIO BROADCASTING CORPORATION recalls the representative of "Noble Venture" asked for free access in the company and the unconditional restitution of the rooms occupied by force by the members of the "Vatra" trade unions.
Protest
The Trade Unions Federation "Sanitas" of medical aids protests against the Presidency's refuse to return to the Parliament the Law regarding the profession of medical aid and the organization and functioning of the order of medical aids. The federation considers in a communique issued to the ROMANIAN RADIO BROADCASTING CORPORATION the present wording of the law totally disregards the activity of the medical aids, and creates tensions and discontents within the sanitary system.
Disputes Over the Incident at "Sofert" Bacau
The disputes between "Sofert" and the military unit 02015 over the incident in which the izolation of an ammonium tank deteriorated continue in Bacau. The tank was fortunately empty, but had it not been the ecological disaster would have affected the entire city of Bacau, as well as neighbouring areas in the counties of Neamt and Vrancea. The managers of the chemical fertilizers producing company "Sofert" accused the MIG 21 planes belonging to the military unit 02015 of having flied at low altitude above the tank. In reply, the National Defense Ministry issued a communique rejecting the accusations, based on video tapes. According to the ROMANIAN RADIO BROADCASTING CORPORATION, many of the 1,500 employees of "Sofert" will be temporarily or permanently fired, since the repairs will take several months and will cost about 4 million dollars.
First Kidney Transplant of the Kind in Europe Performed in Cluj
The specialists at the Institute for Urology and Transplants in Cluj performed on Wednesday a kidney transplant, the first of the kind in Europe. A 27 years old man received a kidney from his father. The newness of the surgery consists in the fact that, considering the incompatibility between the donor and the recepient, the young man had been subject to a complex treatment, consisting in the total replacement of his plasma, to remove the antibodies which might have rejected the transplant. The ROMANIAN RADIO BROADCASTING CORPORATION informed the treatment had been performed in co-operation with the Hospital "John Hopking" in Baltimore, USA.
