POLITICS

The Committee for Agriculture of the Romanian Senate debated the emergency ordinance under number 108 for 2001 regarding agricultural exploitations. As it is shown in the exposee of motives the aim of this normative act is to eliminate the present shortcomings in Romanian agriculture due to the excessive division of fields and tillable surfaces. According to the bill of law under debate the agricultural exploitations which are reasonably sized are to be the basis of Romanian agriculture in order for us to be integrated in the European Union standards, reports ROMANIAN RADIO BROADCASTING CORPORATION.

Debates of the Legal Matters Committee of the Chamber of Deputies

The Legal Matters Committee of the Chamber of Deputies adopted the draft law on international legal support in cases of criminal law, a normative act which allows for speeding up of criminal prosecution as part of actions of international cooperation.
The Chairman of the Committee Ionel Olteanu said, according to ROMANIAN RADIO BROADCASTING CORPORATION, that the passing of this draft bill of law by the specialized committee would solve, among others, the requests of extradition concerning the internationally pursued persons.

Extraordinary Session of the Chamber of Deputies

Starting Monday 27 August the Chamber of Deputies is meeting in extraordinary session for the extension of the deadline on forwarding requests for the retrocession of nationalized buildings and dwellings. The Chairman of the Chamber of Deputies, Valer Dorneanu, also said after the session of the Standing Committee of the Chamber that during the special session also debated are to be the bill of law on the statute of policemen as well as other five bills of law referring to assistence in cases of criminal law and covering areas up to development of infrastructures of towns and cities of Romania, reports ROMANIAN RADIO BROADCASTING CORPORATION.

Protest of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Romania

The Federation of Jewish Communities of Romania is protesting against the release in the town of Iasi in the collection ROMANIANS IN UNIVERSAL HISTORY, a collection which is coordinated by professor Gheorghe Buzatu, of the volume THE NATIONALIST whose author is the Greater Romania Party MP Vlad Hogea. The Jewish Federation is of the opinion that this book incites to racial hatred by its chauvinistic and xenophobic content, informs ROMANIAN RADIO BROADCASTING CORPORATION. The Jewish Federation asks for the trial of the author of the book and of the distributors and voices its belief that the supporters of this kind of action would be prevented from acting like this in the future. • Government session followed by the briefing of the spokesperson of the Cabinet.
• Management of the Ministry of Interior of Romania holds a meeting with the publishers and editors of the main dailies and magazines of the country as well as with the managers of the radio and television stations as well as with foreign media here in Bucharest focused on themes linked to the free circulation of Romanian citizens in the European Union countries and on the properties, dwelling-wise, of the Ministry of Interior staff.
• Extraordinary press conference of the National Liberal Party this morning here in Bucharest.
• Press conferences of the Democratic Party and of the Alliance for Romania Party.
• Socialist Party of Labor lays wreaths of flowers at the Memorial of the Heroes of the People in front of the Romanian Military Academy.
• Launching of the volume WHO'S WHO - ROMANIANS LIVING IN AMERICA by Dan Fornade. It was released in Montreal and it is the first of a series of 12 including Romanians living in all countries of the world .
• Three artists of Romania are participating in the Pieria Folklore Festival of Greece. The festival is part of the events occasioned by the Cultural Olympiad which is organized and hosted by the Hellenic Republic.
• ROMCAR that is representative of FORD for Romania organizes GALA FORD 2001 on a route that crosses the entire country, with stopovers in 13 towns of this country.

ANNIVERSARIES AND COMMEMORATIONS

• 1944 - Romania turned arms against Hitler's Germany and sided with the Allies against the Axis. The Government led by Marshal Antonescu were arrested in the Royal Palace after the Marshal had been summoned for a meeting with King Michael. In the wake of the event another government of Romania was formed led by general Constantin Sanatescu.
• 23 August was the National Holiday of Romania during the communist dictatorship in this country.
