Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu examined the drinking water situation
The Prime Minister of Romania, Mugur Isarescu, together with the Minister of Waters, Forests and Environmental Protection, Romica Tomescu analyzed the drinking water situation of this country. As might be known the level of water in the accumulation lakes has decreased dramatically of late so there is the risk for some regions of the country to have less and less drinking water. Proper decisions in this sense are taken during the Cabinet session today.
Secretary of State with the Foreign Ministry of Romania is paying a visit to Germany
Secretary of State with the Foreign Ministry of Romania, Mihai Razvan Ungureanu, arrived in Germany for a four day visit. He will meet with the deputy of the Federal Foreign Affairs Minister, with the Presidents of the Parliamentary Commissions of Defense and Foreign Policy as well as with the Chairman of the German Parliament. In a statement to RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI Mihai Razvan Ungureanu said he would tackle NATO enlargement, Romania's becoming Chairman of OSCE starting 1 January 2000, the Pact of Stability in South Eastern Europe as well as the problem of the visas for the Romanian citizens to the Schengen countries.
Meeting between Emma Nicholson and Ion Iliescu
The reporter for Romania for the European Parliament, Emma Nicholson met with the President of PDSR - Social Democracy Party of Romania - Ion Iliescu. During the talk it was stressed by Emma Nicholson that corruption has become a scourge in this country and it was absolutely necessary to set up an efficient system of public administration, unitary, without any political implication and utterly professional. However, Emma Nicholson estimated that the most important problem which Romania must solve was that of institutionalized children.
The President of PDSR said that adherence to the European Union was an absolute priority and that in this sense his party was interested in permanent and very direct relations with the European bodies.
The Patriarch of Romania, His Beatitude Teoctist, is visiting Poland
The delegation of the Romanian Orthodox Church led by His Beatitude Teoctist arrived at Byalistock last night. The Orthodox community in that part of Poland made an impressive reception to the guests at the Saint Nicholas Cathedral. There are about three hundred thousand believers in that part of Poland, about 180 kms, North - West of Warsaw.
In the Polish capital yesterday His Beatitude Teoctist gave His Beatitude Sava, the Metropolitan Primate of Warsaw and of entire Poland several gifts including an icon of Virgin Mary. The Polish high men of the cloth were given the order MIRON CRISTEA of the Patriarchy of Romania while the Romanian Ambassador to Poland, Irina Comarovsky was awarded the Patriarchal Cross for Laymen as a blessing at the beginning of her diplomatic career in Poland.
New discoveries attesting Romanian education in Transylvania
A discovery in the aives of the museum of the first Romanian school at the Church SAINT NICHOLAS of the town of Brasov modifies some elements regarding the age, as it were, of Romanian education in the town of Brasov and in south eastern Transylvania. The principal of the school Vasile Oltean told the correspondent of RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI that a fragment of a teaching book in the archives was dated, according to international standards, as having an age of 800 years. Thus we can certify that Romanian education in that part of the country is at least 800 years old, a fact which places it in the XI - th century, four centuries earlier than considered to have been attested until now. As you might know education in that interval was conducted in a building adjoining the church and it was entirely based on books of religion.
Communique of the Foreign Intelligence Service Committee of the Chamber of Deputies
In a communique to mass media the Chamber of Deputies Committee for the Foreign Intelligence Service of Romania it is mentioned that the Home Ministry of this country and all other intelligence communities have been asked to look into several accussations brought to intelligence officers of that service plus a separate report which should clarify whether Romania took any loan from any Arab state including Kuwait in the interval 1989 - 2000. If such a loan was taken or if such loans were taken, then the Chamber of Deputies Committee requests all documents of the Romanian side that led to the loan.
Press conference of the Foreign Minister of Romania, Petre Roman
Foreign Minister Petre Roman said in a press conference which was broadcast by RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI that the statement of the European Parliament reporter for Romania Emma Nicholson was a daring political challenge. Today in Brussels Gunther Verheugen gives our ambassador the complete report which is not so very favorable as reforms until now in this country have not led to a functional type of economy. Petre Roman then said that the serious delays in making a decision regarding the RICOP programme are entirely the responsibility of the prime minister of Romania, Mugur Isarescu.
Response of Prime Minister of Romania to the allegations of Foreign Minister Petre Roman
Mr. Isarescu replied to the statement of Foreign Minister Petre Roman as follows: "Coordination of RICOP PROGRAMME was transferred to the Ministry of Finance from the Ministry of Transports as Minister of Transportation Anca Boagiu, member of the Democratic Party of Romania, refused to coordinate it any longer as she refused to be implied in any activity linked to the programmes of the World Bank and the European Union......if there are any delays in the implementation of the programmes they are linked to tension inside the present coalition and are the result of the habit to avoid responsibilities, a domain in which the Democratic Party members are champions."
Visit of the United States Ambassador to counties of Romania
United States Ambassador to Romania James Rosapepe was the guest of counties Maramures and Satu Mare in the northern part of the country. The visit is part of the ECOLINX programme and are aimed at attracting United States investors in that part of Romania in order to start action of making the environment clean and safe.
Ambassador of Great Britain to Bucharest, Richard Ralf, ended his visit to the Jiu Valley
The Ambassador ended his visit to the Jiu Valley saying that Great Britain would support the local community by a programme meant to ease economic and material difficulties in the area after the closing down of mines. The programme is coordinated by the Department of International Development of the British Cabinet. Already at the disposal of investors is a sum equl to 2.75 million USD to cover costs for hiring dismissed miners.
Debt of Romania to Sweden discussed by the Cabinet of Romania
State Minister Mircea Ciumara has met at Victoria Palace with members of the Foreign Ministry, the Finance Ministry and the Justice Ministry to discuss the debt which Romania has toward the Swedish state. Negociations will be proposed in the letter as Sweden is asking as part of the debt which Romania owes it some companies which were nationalized in the interval 1948 - 1950 and renewal of licenses agreed upon with that country which were terminated in the afore mentioned interval as well, plus some assets which are part of the Romanian vault treasure.
Patriarch of Romania His Beatitude Teoctist is Doctor Honoris Causa of the Lubin Catholic University of Poland
During his visit to Poland His Beatitude Teoctist was granted the title of Doctor Honoris Causa of the Polish Catholic University of the town of Lublin. During the LAUDATIO under the title UNITY OF THE CHURCH IS NOT A UTOPIA professor Vaclav Hrnievici stressed the activity of 71 years of the Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church Teoctist in the service of the Church and of the people; a special chapter was devoted to the visit which Pope John Paul II made to Romania earlier this year for the rapprochement between the Churches of the East and the West. It is in this chapter that we find the sentence according to which Romania might become, as a result of its position at Eastern and Western crossroads, a linking bridge between the two religious communities.

The President of Romania signed the bill that alters Order 66 of 1997 regarding exemption of taxes on salaries and revenues for foreign specialists that work in Romania as part of loan agreements and programmes meant to develop the economic and social life of Romania.

Prime Minister of Romania met with Finance Minister Decebal Traian Remes, with the Governor of the National Bank of Romania and other officials whom he asked to pay increased attention to information given the population and specialists according to which foreign investments are less than real. Inauguration of the WASHINGTON GROUP Company working in Romania

Non repayble funds for Romania
Foreign Minister Petre Roman and the Head of the Delegation of the European Commission to Romania, Fokion Fotiadis, signed in Bucharest three documents that are the basis for 230 million euros given Romania to implement the PHARE programme and the programmes of transfrontier cooperation with Bulgaria and Hungary.
Accords signed by Romania and the European Bank for Investments
According to the documents already signed Romania receives almost 400 million USD for projects in transportation. Stress is laid on the modernization of rail roads, of the Bucharest subway, the ecologization of the harbor of Constanta. A start to rehabilitate national roads with the help of a loan worth 245 million euros was signed at the Ministry of Public Transportation by Cabinet Minister Anca Boagiu, Bucharest General Mayor Traian Basescu and the vicepresident of the European Bank of Investments, Wolfgang Roth.
All parliamentary parties of Romania support the Cabinet programme for the institutionalized children
The signing of the Cabinet programme to this aim was postoned by a week at the request of three of the Parliamentary political parties that asked for some time to analyze the content of the programme following a report of the government. Nevertheless all the parliamentary political parties declared they agreed to support the Cabinet in the efforts to do away with the communist legacy in as far as institutionalized children are concerned.
The Cabinet of Romania passed the rezolution which provides for the doubling of the state allowance for school children
Starting November the monthly allowance for each of the school children of Romania is of 130 000 lei per month. The increase is in the first place meant to assist the younger families that have lower incomes.
Meat could cost more on Christmas
The National Association of Meat Producers says the request for meat and meat products will be met on the markets of the country but that prices could increase by 10 per cent for raw meat and 5 - 6 per cent for meat products, if the Romanian state does not cut down taxes at the level of the European Union.

The President of Romania convened, by decree, the new Parliament of the country, that meets in joint session, on 11 December, at 15:00 in the afternoon.

President Emil Constantinescu is in Nice, France
The President of Romania, Emil Constantinescu, is in Nice, France, for the summit of the European Union which is considered as a very important moment in the process of the enlargement of the organization towards Eastern Europe. In the delegation of Romania there also is Hildegard Puwak who is the future Minister of European Integration, announce sources of PDSR - Social Democracy Party of Romania - whose vice-president Mrs. Puwak is. Also present at Nice is the chief negociator for Romania's adherence to the European Union.
