Traian Lalescu

(1882-1929)

Romanian mathematician; Professor at the University of Bucharest and at the Polytechnical Institutes of Timisoara and Bucharest. His main interest was in the theory of integral equations and its application to problem-solving in the differential equations theory, in which he had remarkable contribution. He produced the first dissertation in the world on integral equations, called: "Introduction to the Theory of Integral Equations" (1911). He also contributed to the study of functional equations, of trigonometric series and mathematical physics, of geometry, mechanics, algebra and the history of mathematics. For those who taught mathematics in higher and high schools, Lalescu's manuals ("Algebraic Calculus", 1924; "A Treatise of Analytical Geometry", 1925) meant a lot.
