MIERCUREA CIUC

Harghita county residence; municipality in E central Romania, seat of Harhita county, situated left of the river Olt, elevation 700 m, in the Ciuc depression, dominated by the Harghita Mountains to the West and the Ciuc Mountains to the East (Eastern Carpathians); population 48,343 (July 1, 1991). All-season resort of local importance, with a tonic stimulative intramontane depression climate (average annual temperature about 7°C; July average 17°C; January average under -6°C; precipitations totalling about 700 mm annually) and springs of ferruginous, bicarbonated, carbonated, hypotonic, hypothermal (21°C) mineral waters recommended in internal cures for the tretment of digestive disorders (hypoacid chronic gastritis, functional disorders of the colon). Mineral water bottling station.

Tourist attractions: the Miko Castle, built in 1621 and restored in 1714 (today housing the county museum), the Roman-Catholic Cathedral, Baroque style (18th c.), the Sumuleu Monastery, founded by voivode Iancu of Hunedoara (15th c.) and rebuilt early in the 19th century. Artificial skating rink.
