THE BRÂNCOVEANU CENTRE AT MOGOSOAIA |
|
The first record about Mogosoaia dates as early as the 24th of April 1598.
From 1681 on, Constantin Brâncoveanu succesively buys pieces of
land and manor houses in the village.
In 1702, Constantin Brâcoveanu had a large and beautiful
building errected on the premises of a former manor house
situated on the border of the lake; it was meant to be inhabitated
by his son Stefan and it copied the style of another Wallachian
palace built by him at Potlogi.
Brâcoveanu's Palace is an architectural monument that
combines Wallachian and Byzantine decorative features with
traits characteristics of the Italian Renaissance.
On the basement there is a cave whose ceiling consists of four
semi-sferical domes disposed around a central pillar.
On the ground floor there are several modest looking rooms
and other living spaces for the servants.
The suits of the princely family as well as reception halls
for important guests were located on the first floor.
Outside stairs lead from the honour courtyard to a large
and dainty balcony placed in the middle of tthe main facade.
Both the balcony and the first floor rooms had been initially
adorned with oriental stucco and mural paintings representing
either members of the princely family or historical themes.
Brâcoveanu Art and Architecture Museum will be housed
in the palace as soon as the extensive restaurations have been completed.
On the facade overlooking the lake there is a wonderfull
"loggia" of Venetian inspiration, with three cusped archades.
Its rich adornment joins together stylistic elements characteristic
both of the Renaissance and the Baroque.
Its elegant and rafined features make this edifice unique in the Romanian residential architecture.
