In a Coopers&Lybrand"s report on the research and development activities in Central and Eastern European countries (report requested by the European Commission), as well as in a recent study of the European Commission, The National Institute for Research & Development in Informatics - ICI Bucharest ranked first among the most well-known research & development institutes in Romania. In a study on the Romanian IT domain, the University of Manchester pointed out that The National Institute for Research & Development in Informatics - ICI Bucharest is "the unique excellence centre in the Romanian IT field". Starting with 1993, in the framework of EC-PECO, COPERNICUS, SAVE, IST and ESPRIT programmes, ICI has been involved in over 40 European research works (projects, excellence networks, working groups), obtained through competition and covering a wide range of IT domains, namely: computer networks, multimedia technologies, expert systems, genetic algorithms, intelligent control and process management systems, decision support systems, modeling and simulation. Since 1997, ICI has been appointed by EuroCASE (The Association of the Science Academies of the EU) as a "contact point" for the " European IST Prize".
