5.2. National Operator of the National
Computer Network for Research and Higher Education (RNC)
The RNC main co-ordinates are:
- scientific co-ordinator: ing. Iulian Popa
- manager: dr. Eugenie Staicut
- Bucharest-Vienna satellite link
- 64 Kbps , TCP/IP protocol
- users: 8,000 in the country (550 of them being connected
directly to the ROEARN Gateway Node installed at ICI)
- 55 operational nodes ( connected via leased line)
- traffic : 19 Gbytes/month
- switched line access for about 120 institutions.
Users of the RNC Gateway Node belong to research institutions
(66%), higher education institutions (20%), professional associations,
high schools, libraries,non-profit GO (14%) . Being operational at ICI
since July 1993, EuropaNet Gateway Node has the following characteristics:
- Bucharest-Amsterdam leased line
- 64 Kbps, X 25 protocol, encapsulated TCP/IP
- subscribers: X 25, TCP/IP networks (ICI, UPB)
- traffic: 19 Gbytes/month
