4. Departments

4.1. Software Tools Department

A. Areas and Activities:

  1. The main 1994 results of the Department included:
    • getting EuropaNET Gateway Node operational (X 25 Protocol, 64Kbps, satellite line Bucharest-Amsterdam);
    • testing procedures on ECHO Network operation and services;
    • getting "Politehnica" University of Bucharest connected as user node;
    • a TCP/IP extension and DTE availability to other users have been envisaged;
    • EARN Internet services improvement;
    • getting more individual users and institutions connected;
    • contributing to National Research Network design, development and operation;
    • logistics for (gopher, www) public data banks development/implementation;
    • working out a necessity and feasibility study as to Y-NET node installation in Romania;
    • participation in the ESATT, TeleServ and INDIS joint research projects of CEC
  2. The following software products have been developed:
    • COPE- constraints representation and processing system
    • ESYS- knowledge acquisition system based on customized constructions method
    • REVENG- reversed engineering system for FORTRAN
    • SINORA- a natural language interfacing system for ORACLE databases
    • VEDA-OCR- Optical Character Recognition System
    • ISLO-M- an interactive system for multicriterial linear optimisations
    • INFERNO- a software product for knowledge acquisition and processing.
  3. The CEC Programmes have also included 3 research projects which specialists of this department carried out:
    • Integrated Knowledge Modelling Environment
    • RENEGADE-Research Network on Genetic Algorithms Development
    • IRMA- Intelligent Classification and Retrieval of Multimedia Information
    Co-operative actions ,in a large selection area, have been initiated with SIVECO France and CoIn Potsdam, Germany. An UNIX- based TTC in Open Systems was set up , using the ORACLE DBM.

Going through a re-organisation in 1993, this department has a three-fold research orientation.:
